WELCOME TO MWVST 2011-2012

Sept.14, 2012

Dear MWVST Skiers, Families and Friends,

I hope everyone has been enjoying the great stretch of weather we have had lately. It won’t be long though before we are back on snow. We are busy gearing up and preparing for the season. Every year seems to be busier and we have been hard at work getting things ready.

You will be receiving the ski team handbook and registration forms very shortly. There is a great deal of information contained in it, so please review it carefully. Many of you who are new to the program will have a lot of questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have.

SUNDAY DRYLAND TRAINING:
Our first dryland hike is Sunday, Oct. 7. In the event of bad weather, call the ski team office 603-356-7627. We will be doing the Moat Range hike. Meet at the trailhead parking lot (Diana’s Baths) at 8:30 on West Side Rd. We are shortening the hike this year to get us down earlier. We should be back down by 3 pm.

Remember that our Equipment Fit Session is at Stan and Dan’s at 4 pm on Oct.7. We will be doing all of our equipment ordering that day. You will receive racer purchase prices, which is a tremendous savings. Please plan on attending the fit session to order any ski equipment you might need. This is a terrific opportunity to address your equipment needs for the season. Representatives from all the major ski companies will be on hand to assist you in selecting the right gear. Members of the coaching staff will also be on hand to lend a helping hand. The racer purchase program is for athletes only and offers a significant discount on skis, boots, bindings, helmets, goggles and poles.

Please remember that you need to attend the Moat Hike to be eligible for racer purchase equipment.

EQUIPMENT: We did a great deal of equipment testing at Mt.Hood this summer. We found that every company is making great product. You cannot make a bad decision, it is all working. The important thing is to get sized correctly. Make sure the boot fits well and is not too big. Boot work can be done to make them fit better. Err on the smaller size. As far as ski length stick to regulation lengths. Minimum ski lengths for ages 15 years and older: For Women: SL- 155 cm, GS-175 cm and up. SG 195 cm, DH-205.Minimum lengths for Men: SL-165 cm but there is a 10 centimeter tolerance for J2 Men. This means J2 men can use a 155cm SL ski if they prefer. GS-180 and up.SG-200, DH-210. I will be able to help you with sizing at the Fit Session. We will also discuss while hiking. In the meantime I would like to have each athlete in the program email me with their equipment needs so that we can prepare for the fit session. Let me know what product you are thinking of skiing on and what sizes you are looking at. I will also need your height and weight as well as shoe size.

CONDITIONING: I hope that each of you is doing some strength training in addition to your Fall Sport. Please refer to the attached Strength Programs. The stronger you are the better you will ski, plain and simple. I am available to work out with any local athletes after school at 121 FIT. Please contact me if you are available to train. Once Fall Sports conclude we will be working out as a team Mon-Wed-Fri from 3:30-4:30. 121 Fit will be our ski team training center and reduced rates are available for all MWVST, Cranmore, Attitash, Wildcat and King Pine athletes. Athletes playing a Fall Sport should try to strength train at least twice a week. Refer to the ski team strength program.

TUITION: Please remember to pay your ski team tuition prior to October 15 to get the reduced rate.

USSA/NHARA-Please join these organizations if you haven’t already done so.

COLORADO FALL CAMP at COPPER MOUNTAIN: The early payment deadline is Sept.15 for reduced rates. Things are filling up fast and lodging space is limited. If you are interested in attending, please contact me as soon as possible. Applications and releases can also be downloaded from: www.peakperformancecamp.com

Copper has already received some snow and snowmaking begins in 2 weeks. Train next to the World Cup Teams as they prepare for the World Cup races out West. Call Denise at World Wise Travel for airfare info. 1-800-989-6888 or Jane at Penny Pitou Travel, 603-356-0055. This is a tremendous opportunity to get in a high volume of free skiing and GS and SL training before things get going back in the East.

That’s all for now. I look forward to seeing everyone on October 7th.
